The ITALIAN-CHINESE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (ICMA)

The Italian-Chinese Medical Association (ICMA) was founded by Prof. Paolo Mantegazza (pharmacologist) supported by Prof. Edmondo Malan (surgeon) and Prof. Carlo Lorenzo Cazzullo (psichiatrist), on 26 March 1973. After a meeting in Beijing between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, G. Medici, and the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China, Zhou Enlai, Dr Bruno P. Pieroni took the initiative of creating ICMA.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Italy encouraged the idea and promoted the first official visit of the Italian delegation to Beijing. Prof. Paolo Mantegazza, the current Honoured President of the State University of Milan, was appointed President.

ICMA organized more than 50 missions of Italian medical delegations to China, and held seminars and roundtables concerning Western medicine and the possible integration between Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine in Beijing, Shanghai, Urumchi and in other Chinese locations.

Under the aegis of ICMA, the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine published the first Italian translation of the Manual of Acupuncture, and Prof. Elena Massarani, a chemical- pharmacologist researcher, published "Herbs in China", the first panorama of Chinese herbs.

Nowadays, ICMA is lead by Prof. Umberto Solimene, President, supported by Dr Adriana Bazzi and Prof. Emilio Minelli, Vice Presidents. Dr Bruno Pieroni was the Secretary-General (he died in the 2013) and Prof. Elena Massarani is the Treasurer.

ICMA has received invitation to participate actively in the International Symposiums of Traditional Medicine . At the moment, ICMA has started several initiatives that will lead to work in synergy with the World Health Organization and to promote the exchange of delegations, in order to improve the integration between Western and traditional Chinese medicine.Closed contacts are with the FEMTEC (World Federation of Hydrotherapy) concerning the Integration of TCM and Thermal medicine.
